5th Grade Technology Projects

2013-2014
===============================

In addition to the projects below, we used technology throughout our year together.  Each day we have a Class Photographer and a Class DJ who use our iTouches to play music and take pictures during the day!

End of Day Reflection Time
We instituted a few new end-of-day self-reflection tasks this year!  A few of our new tasks involved using technology like word processing to add an entry to our class blog, using our iTouch to shoot a video-selfie in our class “photo booth”, and using our iTouch to take an Instagram photo.

Check out our rotation schedule.  Every other week we have the “Write It” task and then the alternating weeks we rotate through “Blog It“, “Shoot It”, “Type It”, “Instagram It“, and “Talk It”!

Questioning Practice:
One of the skills we work on in our class is the skill of asking and refining questions.  This year we started a running document – a collection of questions which we added to after watching a series of video clips about various topics like seals, robots, etc.  We needed to use Edmodo to access the video clips and also use our school network to access our question documents in order to add new questions to them.

Here is what the assignment looked like on Edmodo:

 Accessing Information:
We use technology to access information too, like in this SunRail activity!

In another information-using activity, we needed to work with information that was available online on-screen and only in graphic formats.  We sure are building our research skills!

ThingLinks:
We created a ThingLinks to practice the process of gathering and using information.  Check out this one:

Valentine Mix-Up!
The ACME Card Factory had a HUGE mix up this week!  Their robotic arm mixed the materials for Valentine cards in with the materials for Halloween cards, Birthday cards, etc!  We used a Morphological Matrix to find our unusual combinations and then we set to work trying to think of creative ways to make those “ingredients” fit into a Valentine’s Day message!

We used Word and Paint to create Valentines this year!    If you follow the heart below, you’ll see our names and the Creativity Tools we used to make these odd mixed-up Valentines!   Here are the directions we followed.   And this is our QR Code Master page which we inserted our QR Codes into and then printed to take home!

Close Reading Activity:  Blue Whale Barrel Roll
We practiced our close reading skills on this Edmodo-based activity – as well as a few new technology skills like using our school network to open and revise network documents and using Word’s editing tools to get feedback from a teacher.  Lots of new skills here!    Check out this sample:

Infographics:
This year Miss Kelly’s 5th graders learned about Infographics – graphics designed to give information about a topic.  (Check out these examples that we used in an in-class activity.)

We took it one step further and created our own data set (how much LSE parents and students use their Mobile Data Devices) by creating a survey on Survey Monkey.   [You can check out the surveys here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/67Y7VFR & http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/69Y3FTH. ]  Next, we collected and analyzed the data, and then we learned a new program (Glogster) to create our own infographics!
