Emerald’s Do’s and Dont’s: An easy and informative guide to “promposals”

With prom steadily approaching and everyone’s getting their dates and groups together here’s a friendly list of do’s and don’ts when asking your friend to prom. Enjoy.
Do take initiative to make sure no one is left out of the prom experience. Be a good friend and invite a homeschooled companion along to dance the night away. Nothing wrong with wanting your friends around on the most memorable night of your life.
Do come up with a clever way to ask them. This is 2017 after all and each year “promposals” get grander and grander. I suggest a bouquet of roses, maybe some streamers and a catchy song. The point is to make the person feel special.
Don’t go too far out the box and decide the only and best way to make your POC friend feel loved and cherished is to bring up a three hundred year struggle insulting your friend and their entire race in the process. Just a suggestion.
Now I know what you’re thinking who would do such a thing? Isn’t that distasteful and downright offensive? Why yes, yes it is but that didn’t stop two teens in Coconut Creek Florida from doing that exact thing to their African American friend.
The two, who have conveniently remained nameless, made a poster to invite their friend who is homeschooled to attend Monarch High schools’ prom. On the poster, which lacked any real design or flare, they wrote: “you may be picking cotton, but we’re picking you to go to prom with us”. No, I’m not kidding they actually wrote that.
After posting a picture of the successful proposal, as the friend saw no problem with the not so discreet nod to slavery, someone screenshot the picture and posted it sparking national media coverage.
People are equal parts angry at the girls who made the poster and outraged at the happy response from the girl who received the invitation.
The girls were suspended for their actions and are now seeking forgiveness from the public and their community.
One of the girl’s father apologized on behalf of the two and tried to clear the incident up claiming it was an inside joke between friends that was never meant to be publicly broadcast. He explained that the black girl’s grandmother owns a cotton farm and that was the “jokes” origin.
Still, with a high school education, you would assume they would’ve considered the repercussions of their actions beforehand.
The duo is suspended while an investigation takes place and while still allowed the privilege to attend prom they’ve expressed fear over attending the event.
So there you have it, folks, the do’s and don’t’s of asking your friend to prom. Simply put just remember to avoid any sort of pun or joke that could offend or disrespect anyone and you should be fine.
