Five Years Since Sandy Hook and Still No Action

I was sitting in a cafeteria at Bethune Cookman University, eating and laughing with my friends when I heard the news.

My mother, at Publix, grocery shopping for that night’s dinner, my three-year-old sister in the cart.

My brother’s playing their video games in their room after faking sick to spend the day at home.

Where were you five years ago, when you got the news that 27 innocent lives had been taken at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut? What were you doing?

On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza trespassed onto Sandy Hook Elementary School and proceeded to take the lives of students and faculty, the youngest victim six years old.

It was at the second largest mass shooting in modern U.S history. Since then there have been over 1,000 mass shootings according to the Gun Violence Archives.

At the time, there was a call for stricter gun control and talk about taking action to ensure something so senseless would never happen again.

But then there was San Bernardino, then Pulse, then Las Vegas. And still, there is only talk.

December 14 is a date that will forever hold the pain of countless families who lost their sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, friends and fellow citizens.

Do more than posting a picture in remembrance this year with a hashtag, take action.

The phone numbers and emails to your local and state representatives are available with the click of a mouse. If you can text a number to ensure Net Neutrality stays put, you can take the time to make a call that just might prevent any more senseless violence.
