The Vow has just enough romance to make it a must-see date movie.

Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) and Channing Tatum (Dear John) play a happily married couple. While sitting without a seatbelt in a parked car, the couple is hit by a truck sending Paige (McAdams) through the windshield.

As she wakes from a medically induced coma, she finds herself in the hospital. Her husband, Leo (Tatum) comes to find the love of his life has no recollection of him or any of her life over the past five years. The movie focuses on Leo’s fight to win back her love for him.

This film is a before-and-after story of the accident. Writers expended effort into the shifting of the times while filling in the blanks for viewers as well as Paige. Its a well written story, making it easy to relate to the frustrations of both spouses as one tries to force herself into someone she doesn’t remember and another doesn’t recognize his wife. Though Leo’s faith in his wife seems to falter, he keeps his heroic role evident in every scene. As he narrates, he ties the story together.

The relationship of the fun-loving couple is depicted as artistic and creative. Leo owns a recording studio and Paige is a sculptor. To contrast, she grew up in the pretentious suburbs of Chicago with a wealthy family behind her. Paige’s old life looks glamorous and perfectly put together turns out exceedingly bland until the realization of something she can’t imagine forgetting.

Though the two go through a difficult time, the chemistry remains. Tatum portrays a loving, concerned husband looking with his wife for her memory, standing by her every step of the way. Most Hollywood love stories are cliche – guy gets girl, girl and guy fight, then make up. Thankfully, this movie is nothing like that. As secrets from the past resurface, the movie becomes far from predictable. The ending is realistic, heartfelt and believable.

The story, inspired by true events, illustrates people’s need to leave someone or something to realize where they truly belong. Tatum and McAdams couldn’t be more believable as an extraordinary couple fighting the odds.
