Balancing perfect grades and an active social life is a feat that is not often accomplished. Graduating as one of Boone’s valedictorians, senior Lauren Hutsell proved it could be done.
“No one pressured me into having a 4.0. I have always been intrinsically motivated and competitive so this was something I did because I knew I could,” Hutsell said.
Spending time each week to study was not all that Hutsell managed, she was a three year varsity cheerleader, Sophomore Class treasurer, Student Body senator and participated in clubs such as National Honor Society, Math Club, FCA, Chemistry Club, Mu Alpha Theta and the Spanish Club. To Hutsell, the challenge was something she knew she had to overcome.
“Balancing school work, sports and clubs was my biggest struggle but also one of my greatest achievements. It really taught me how to manage my time wisely,” Hutsell said.
Not only does a successful student need time management skills, one needs to have the self-motivation to study material beyond what is assigned. This means taking the time to go above and beyond what is asked, which is not always easy.
“My hardest class was AP US History with Mrs. Stilwell. I had to really study and read the book to do well on tests and quizzes,” Hutsell said.
Hutsell was accepted into the University of Florida in the fall. Her advice to the upcoming freshman is to stay involved in school activities. Maintaining grades while still having a social life was her greatest accomplishment and she proved it was possible.
“My biggest achievement throughout high school was staying well-rounded and maintaining interests in other things besides grades,” Hutsell said.
While at UF, Hutsell plans on going into the medical field to pursue her passion of helping others.
“I think it not only takes determination and focus, but time management skills as well. Staying driven and motivated helped me reach success,” Hutsell said.
