Following in his brother’s footsteps, sophomore R.Vaughan Harris leads the Sound of the Braves marching band as a drum major.

Auditions and interviews for the job occurred at the end of last year. Judges analyzed how the student conducted a piece of music. Later, through recognizing the time signature of an different piece played for the students, they must conduct to the best of their ability. Band directors and a group of judges appointed Harris to the position.

“My brother did it before me and my family has a big musical background, so it was important I follow the tradition,” Harris said.

From a young age Harris’ influences involving music came from his father, who participated in a band in college. His father, Anthony Bianchi, learned how to play piano and guitar, which Harris decided to tackle. With every chance he receives, Harris surrounds himself with music, even while playing some to do homework.

Drum majors must possess natural leadership skills, social skills to interact with bandmates, and an understanding of music theory; all of which play substantial roles. Harris embodies important factors through body movements and facial expressions in his conducting. Some of his responsibilities include encouraging everyone to embrace his full potential, establishing the tempo and portraying of the show must go on mindset.

“Students respect Vaughan for his leadership skills and are willing to listen and do as he says. He has the whole band under his command and students do not question his authority,” band director Joshua Jackson said.

Harris asks his brother, Alexander Unzueta-Harris, for technique advice and how to handle situations that arise with band members. Like his brother, V. Harris conducts the band with passion and effort.

“My brother was a great drum major and I try to carry on some of his traditions, but I do show that we are two different people,” Harris said.

Not only did V. Harris’ brother leave large shoes to fill, but also higher expectations arose because of Harris’ young age.

“Vaughan is what I consider a ‘causal’ leader. He leads by example rather than take an authoritarian approach. He does what is expected and others follow,” Jackson said.

Harris makes a point to improve the band as a whole. In his position he notices the sections’ strengths or weaknesses and addresses them in the leadership’s weekly meetings.

Harris hopes to lead the Sound of the Braves to reach their full potential, both during half time shows and at various competitions October to November.
