Due to testing in the intermediate grades, our schedule will change slightly on Monday, January 12th. Our P.E. time will be from 10:00 to 10:40.
Curriculum Night is next Thursday, January 22nd. There will be a variety of presentations for parents to attend, as well special activities just for students. It is a great opportunity to hear about what/how your child is being taught at school, and what you can do to support learning at home. A pink flyer went home on Friday with descriptions of each of the sessions being offered. The backside of the flyer is a Chick-Fil-A order form. You can pre-order dinner to enjoy at school before the sessions begin. I hope to see you all there!
Due to the short week and our field trip to Sea World, we will NOT have spelling words or a spelling quiz this week. Instead, Monday night’s homework will be a special snowman book report. This time they will read a fiction story and use the snowman’s body to recount the story using beginning, middle and end. Please make sure your child picks a book on his/her level and writes in complete sentences with capital letters and punctuation. Book reports provide an opportunity for students to practice applying the reading strategies and skills that we’ve been learning in class. It is important for students to practice these skills with a “good fit” book that will challenge their reading. Since we are working on recounting, we want the students to retell the story in their own words without copying from the text. If your child is struggling with this, close the book and have him/her just talk to you about what happened. In class we use the “think it, say it, write it” format. Sometimes saying it out loud first really helps with putting it on paper.
Our “Juicy Word of the Week” is appear.
Last week I introduced another one of the 7 Habits of Happy Kids: Habit #4: Think win-win! This habit focuses on the idea of “I win, you win, we win” and finding compromises. Feel free to remind your child of this habit when sibling wars break out at home!
