Cooperative learning is a huge part of our classroom. We are ALL teachers and we learn from one another. I follow the Kagan model of cooperative learning, which relies on specific structures for organizing students to interact in positive and meaningful ways. In order for an activity to be considered true cooperative learning with high levels of engagement, it must follow 4 basic principles, known as PIES:
-
Positive Interdependence: Is a gain for one, a gain for another? Are students on the same side?
-
Individual Accountability: Is individual, public performance required?
-
Equal Participation: Is participation approximately equal (equal time and/or equal opportunity)?
-
Simultaneous Interaction: What percent are overtly active at once?
