Sports. An escape from reality. A goal to strive towards. A possible way into college. Playing a sport can mean a different thing to everybody. At Timber Creek, there are around 18 different sports that students can participate in and each of them brings their own type of exhilaration and skills to the table. But how do you become the best of the best?

For every sport offered at TC, there is a varsity team for that sport. Being on the varsity team generally means years of experience, training, and practice all put into that one sport. Generally, the people who make the varsity teams are sophomores, juniors, and seniors, however, many passionate and talented freshmen have the opportunity of making the team as well. This year, at least 17 freshmen have played for TC’s varsity teams during fall and winter sports and more are sure to play as spring sports are coming up.

Out of all the sports, girls basketball and soccer have the most freshman with 3 on girls soccer and 4 on girls basketball. Midfielders Mya Mujica and Ava Russell as well as defender Allison Brockman are some of the more recent additions to the girls soccer team. Currently playing their season as a winter sport, the girls varsity soccer team is 6-0 with 0 goals given up. Mujica has been playing soccer for 10 years, including on a club team, the Avalon Middle School team, and now Timber Creek’s varsity team. “High school games and middle school games are completely different. In high school, there are much higher stakes, especially since we’re 6-0 with 0 goals scored against us. So far I enjoy high school soccer way more than middle school soccer,” said Mujica.

On the girls varsity basketball team, Channing Warren, Isabella Spence, Karishma Ortiz, and Brooklyn Henderson are all freshmen who have been able to show off their skills. Warren, who, like Mujica, has played club basketball as well for the Avalon Middle School team, has come onto the court multiple times during games to try to help lift the team to a victory. When speaking about her experiences being on the varsity team, Warren stated, “I feel normal being on the varsity [team] because it’s high intensity basketball and it compares to club basketball.” Recently, the girls basketball team lost to Wekiva High School and has a total record of 2-2, with a conference record of 1-0.

Throughout all of the Timber Creek teams, you can find freshman and upperclassmen alike. All of these teams share a common goal and within all of these teams you can find true passion and dedication. From football to soccer, from basketball to bowling, from cheerleading to golf and everything in between, our school is represented by highly trained and skilled student athletes. Coming from different backgrounds and different ages, they all play for one team.
