Timber Creek’s Baseball Team Talks Balancing Sports & Classes

By Olivia Acevedo

High school is a pivotal time in a person’s life. Everyone wants that quintessential
“high school experience” with football games, pep rallies, spirit weeks, and clubs.
However, this also comes with deadlines for essays, studying for final exams, and
stressing over college applications. With the beginning of the fall season approaching
and many upcoming games, Timber Creek’s varsity baseball team prepares for a busy
couple of months. With practices every day and graduation around the corner, the boys
must find a way to manage their time, school work, and figure out what their future has
in store for them in terms of baseball.

The varsity baseball team is mostly made up of juniors and seniors. This is the
time where most students are starting to apply for colleges, tour schools, and just
generally figuring out their plans for the next few years. Many student athletes face the
decision of continuing their sport in college or starting a new journey and junior Ethan
Torres is one of them. “I would like to play in college to see better competition and see
how good I really am,” Torres said. “But I also have other aspirations like being a realtor
and possibly going into the military.” No matter what he decides, Torres has
unconditional support from his friends and family.

Another challenge athletes face is finding a way to stay on top of school work
from their classes. It takes a lot of time and effort to be successful in a sport, and
baseball is no exception. The players have practice 5 days a week after school which
can be very time consuming. The boys need to find a way to balance this with
schoolwork, and junior Carter Capen has seemed to master this. “I manage my time,”
Capen stated, “like getting my homework done instead of going out with friends.” It
seems that the hard work is worth it for the satisfaction of winning a game.

How the team tackles these obstacles that are thrown at them show how resilient
and capable they are. Their hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed. No matter
what they decide to do after high school, we know that Timber Creek will always have
their back.

School Pride. Out on the field, senior Jeremiah “JT” Torres shows off his Timber
Creek jersey and hat. Torres has had a great time on the varsity team. “Playing for TC
has been a great experience,” Torres said. “primarily because we have coaches who
are able to help us learn the game and grow as players.” Photo donated.
