This past Sunday the Golden Globes took place which signified the official start of award season. Each year 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press bestow the Golden Globe award , recognizing excellence in film and television, at his home and abroad. This years ceremony was the 74th ceremony and it was hosted by the Tonight Shows Jimmy Fallon. This award ceremony is known to be the second biggest night in Hollywood, after the Academy Awards, and being filled a little less formal and a little more fun than the Oscars. This award season has been one of the most contested season yet , with a huge number of knockout performances that award analyst haven’t even figured out who is the clear winner.
Also this year’s award was one of the most diverse yet. With actors of color such as Denzel Washington, nominated for Best Director and Actor, Viola Davis nominated for Best Supporting Actress, and Dev Patel nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Other nominees included Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling , Casey Affleck, Tom Hiddleston, Claire Foy, and Sarah Paulson. The films this year with the most nominations were La La Land ,7, and Moonlight and the television series , The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story and The Night Manager had the most nominations as well. Also every year the Hollywood Foreign Press presents an actor or actress with the Cecil B. DeMille Award an honorary Golden Globe Award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment”. This years recipient was arguably the most gifted actress of our generation , Meryl Streep.
This years biggest winner was the musical La La Land , which one all 7 of the awards it was nominated for, a first in Golden Golden Globe history. Moonlight won for Best Motion Picture-Drama but shockingly Best Supporting Actor nominee Mahershala Ali, favored to win, lost. Viola Davis won for her performance in Fences. First time winners Casey Affleck and french actress Isabelle Huppert won their first ever Golden Globe for Best Actor-Drama and Best Actress-Drama , for his outstanding performance in Manchester by the Sea and Elle. Rapper and actor Donald Glover won Best Actor-Comedy Series for his role in Atlanta and Tracee Ellis Ross won Best Actress for her role in the hilarious show Black-ish.
Hollywood isn’t the only thing excited for the Golden Globes. Senior Paris Blyden is an avid fan of films and every year award season rolls around she religiously watches every aspect of it. This year she attended a Golden Globes viewing party with family and friends. “I love watching the Golden Globes and all the other award shows, it’s sort of a tradition every year,” said Blyden. “We have a sort of game we play where everyone picks who the winners are gonna be and who ever predicted the most correct wins a a prize.” Blyden says that watching the Golden Globes has made her even more excited for the Academy Award.
