Pre-Med Club
By Nicole Nesheiwat
Pre-med is an engaging club that offers a diverse array of interactive activities that focus around the fascinating world of medicine. Members have the unique opportunity to participate in hands-on experiences, including dissections and suturing sessions, which provide invaluable insights into the intricacies of the human body and medical procedures. In addition to these exciting activities, Pre-med also hosts a series of smart and talented medical guest speakers throughout the year such as Tyler Kusaie and Ethan Blanton, who are both paramedics in Lake County, and Dr. Mukherjee who is a Cardiologist. These speakers are willing to share their knowledge, experiences, and insights, to students who are eager to learn whilst offering club members a real-world perspective on the medical profession.
Interestingly, despite its name, Pre-med is not exclusively for students pursuing careers in medicine. It’s an inclusive club that attracts all kinds of students all united by their shared interest in healthcare and a commitment to community service. Many students join the club to take advantage of the community service opportunities. It provides easy ways to get your hours for bright future scholarships whilst also allowing them to give back to their communities and exploring their passion for healthcare. “More people should join Pre-Med because it is a great club to gain medical knowledge from and make connections with members and foundations/guest speakers!” said Junior vice president Isidora Montenegro.
One of the organizations the club volunteers with is the Ronald Mcdonald house or RMH for short. This organization helps struggling parents with children who are receiving medical treatment in the hospital. They provide them with the essentials such as housing, toiletries and other necessities. “Another service project that we do is a food drive, this is a very important project because it helps restock the community pantry providing all the families with easily accessible food,” said junior Bryanna Celso, who is head of the Ronald Mcdonald House committee. The organization also goes beyond this by offering a less stressful environment for the siblings of the kids who are in the hospital by providing them with a game room.
The most important part of this club’s continued existence and success is the unwavering support of Mrs. Stevens, who instructs courses in Biomedical Science 3 to 4, Medical Intervention, and Biomedical Interventions. With 10 years of dedicated sponsorship, Mrs. Stevens has played a pivotal role in nurturing the club’s growth. In the beginning the club started with just 40 members, but with her commitment and efforts she has transformed it into its current flourishing state. “I want people to be proud to be nerds and science geeks,” Stevens said. Throughout the decade, she and this club have helped countless students with the opportunity to explore and flourish in the world of medicine.
