It is time for the second blood drive of the year. For those of who have not done this before, we sign up students to donate through their English classes, but this does not necessarily mean that class will be missed. NHS officers will collect the sign-up sheets on Friday Nov. 22 and appointment cards will be passed back the following week.
Some facts about the high demand of blood donations:
60% of the population will need blood at some point in their lives.
But only 5% of the population actually donates blood.
Every 2 seconds, someone needs blood.
If you donate blood, within 48 hours you may have saved three lives.
1/5 of the blood donated in Central Florida comes from high school students (Timber
Creek is a top donating school in all of Florida.)
You can donate blood every 8 weeks.
In order to donate blood, students must:
Be in good health
Be at least 16 years old, with parental permission (no parental permission needed if 18)
Weigh at least 110 pounds
Have had no tattoos within the last year (Please Note: Students no longer have to wait to donate blood after a piercing. As long as the piercing was done under sterile conditions, students may donate blood.)
