Events Coming Up in September for Hispanic Heritage Month

By Lexi Jones

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage has been a long-standing tradition. Lasting from September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage month commemorates the independence of several Latin American countries. This list includes Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Americans with roots stemming from these five countries honor their culture together, especially during this time.

There are countless ways to start new traditions. Isabella Atencio shared, “I celebrate by trying to learn new things about different Hispanic countries with my friends, family, and those who like to learn about our culture.” Celebrating can look different depending on the person, whether it be individually becoming familiar with Hispanic artists or cooking a Latin-inspired meal with family. At the end of the day the root of the importance is “we get to celebrate our culture and share our traditions and customs,” said Atencio.

For this year’s in-school celebration “SGA is working in collaboration with Latinos in Action and Hispanic Club to put together an event in the courtyard,” said Soha Shaik, Senior SGA member. Everyone can look forward to interactive tables for various countries and music during both A and B lunches. Soha explained, “Students will be able to walk around to learn about the different countries and try candies and cuisines.” Thanks to the SGA Citizenship Development Committee, the Director of Citizenship Development, and Latinos in Action, there will be plenty of food, dancing, games, and fun.
