Timber Creek’s Student Government Association Holds Dance Marathon Fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network
By Soha Shaik
Each year, Timber Creek holds a fundraiser with the Children’s Miracle Network to raise money for children who are sick and injured. This year, the Student Government Association has a goal to raise $10,000 by the actual Dance Marathon on February 28, 2020. So far, they have raised $2,164 since October of 2019. Each member of SGA signed up through the Children’s Miracle Network and pledged to raise a certain amount back in October.
How the fundraiser works is that SGA members register with Children’s Miracle Network through the Timber Creek team. From there they send out e-mails and messages to friends and family to spread the word. Each member sets a goal and tries to achieve it by the end of Dance Marathon. The fundraiser then consists of 2 major events, the 5k and Dance Marathon itself. The 5K, originally scheduled for December 14 at 8 am, was postponed to a later date, currently to be determined. It cost $10 for students and $15 for adults and all of the proceeds are to go 100% back to the Children’s Miracle Network. Then, in February there is Dance Marathon. Students participating in the fundraiser stay dancing to raise more money to “stand for those who can’t”. Also, some of the children who are sick and their families come to Timber Creek and tell their stories of struggle and how this fundraiser has helped them.
Many of the upperclassmen in SGA have participated in Dance Marathon in the past. They all had wonderful things to say about the fundraiser. For example, our student body president Isaac Alexander, a senior, said, “Dance Marathon has shed light on issues for decades and allows the community to develop a sense of togetherness and set the stage for future generations.” Clearly, to him Dance Marathon is an integral part in Timber Creek contributing to helping those who are less fortunate. Likewise, Daniella Vega, a junior said, “Dance Marathon allows us to stand for those who can’t (the children who are ill) so we go out of our way to raise money for these kids who may not even live in our community so that they can get the help that they need while dealing with these kids’ illnesses.” It’s increasingly obvious that Dance Marathon is a huge part of the SGA and what they do to give back to the community.
Timber Creek has been participating in Dance Marathon for many years and every year they prove their dedication to giving back. Dance Marathon is a fun way to raise money for a good cause and learn about what the Children’s Miracle Network does for the children who are sick and their families. So, if you want to help the community and children who are fighting against serious illnesses, donate to Dance Marathon, run in the 5k, and attend Dance Marathon in February!
