Once again, I am here to talk about up and coming/unknown artists and bands. However, this issue shines light on the Indie/Folk and Alternative side of music.
At the very top of my list is the London native band Years and Years. The band’s front man Olly Alexander’s beautiful compilation of soft and soulful vocals that, when infused with the band’s electronic and acoustic elements, creates an enchanting track. Although they remain unsigned, they are making their mark around the music circuit.
Although the lovely Lana Del Rey (formerly known as Lizzy Grant) is currently on the rise and at the peak of her stardom, Del Rey has yet to receive the recognition she deserves. She is the most unconventional artist in the industry to date. Her music is instilled with her coy attitude and sensual voice. Del Rey is a musical genius as well as a goddess who makes you fall more in love with her through every song.
Solo artist J. Tillman made the smartest move in his career by taking on his new found identity as Father John Misty. Father John Misty takes a completely different route than J. Tillman would. His dramatic departure is a lovely medley of indie, folk, and rock. Father John Misty’s dark and mysterious vocals combined with melodic instrumentals straddle the line of simplicity and complexity, making it all the more worthwhile to listen to.
Another London native Gabriel Bruce captivates you with every dark and dreamy lyric sung with his raspy, deep voice. His songs are like a dark fantasy that hits your soul just as the instrumentals begin to climax. He has a timeless style that makes him impossible to ignore.
Brooklyn indie pop group, Haerts is a refreshingly new duo to embrace the scene. Their airy voices and enchanting tracks are what set them apart from the rest of the industry today. Although they’re new to the scene, Haerts shows experience and maturity in their music. They set up an image in each song that makes their music easy to get lost in.
These artists have been chosen for their individuality and style that sets them apart from the artists out right now. I feel these artists have the potential to be the next big thing, but only time will tell.
