How students have been getting back into a normal school routine after Covid

It’s no surprise that covid has affected everyone in different ways, but what we can all agree on is the dramatic impact covid had on school life. In March 2020, all students were expecting an extra week of spring break, but 2 years later school is just now starting to get back in order. After such a long break, it’s refreshing to finally be closer to a normal school year here at Timber Creek.
Many students hated online school because it was hard for them to focus. Freshman, Zion Valentine was 13 and in 6th grade when covid hit. Valentine said, “I hated online school because I would always be getting distracted with stuff around my house.” With pets, TV, phones, and video games, it’s hard not to be distracted when the only thing you have relating to school is a zoom call. Not to mention how lots of students would have issues with wifi when going on the call. Other students like Junior, Travis Iscolica (who was 14 and in 8th grade when covid hit) actually enjoyed it. Iscolica said, “Online school was awesome because I could lay in bed all day while doing school.” Though this sounds like a dream for some students, others may feel their learning is being affected with this freedom. Overall most students can agree that with online school it was hard to focus and get assignments done.
When asking students around the school about how they feel now that school is getting back to normal, most of the students had similar responses- they were excited. Here at Timber Creek, we are very spirited and care greatly about our sports, clubs, and school spirit. That is what many students missed most about high school. Sophomore, Nicole Lobo said, “I am so glad I got to experience last year normal because going to football games, pep rallies, and experiencing spirit weeks gets me excited for all the years to come.” The school events aren’t the only things great about in person school. The social effect that Covid had on students is another important topic. Lots of students couldn’t see their friends during online school because of the risks it could have caused; some students went weeks without seeing friends or family. So now, with things slowly getting back, it’s very exciting to be seeing friends every day. Junior, Leo Vantil said, “I am a very social person, so online school was boring for me, but now with in person school I can talk to my friends all day which is nice.”
Overall, it’s great to see all the smiles on the students’ faces when just walking around campus. With football season starting up, and all the spirit weeks yet to come, it will be exciting to see the participation of all students at TC.
