Hurricane Michael Relief Drive
Recently Florida was hit by Hurricane Michael, it was a category four storm and it greatly affected the people that live here. Not only did it destroy homes and families, many people died in this hurricane. This storm affected almost everyone in florida because even if you are far enough inland to not get hit by the storm, you could have family that isn’t so far in and they got hit by the storm. Obviously we cannot control mother nature and the storms that come through florida but the only thing we can do is prepare and help those who were affected. That’s why Timber Creek High School’s Student Government Association and our Early Childhood Education Center decided that we would have a Hurricane Michael Relief Drive for the people who need the help.
In this drive we asked for people to donate a variety of items including paper towels, toilet paper, baby products, feminine products, and even clothes. Anything in these situations will help. Early Childhood teacher, Mrs. Houston said, “I know that at anytime we can be hit by a hurricane in Orlando. I lived here the year we were hit by Charley, Frances, and Jeanne, and I was without power for three weeks. I can’t imagine losing everything, and I want to be able to help those who did lose everything. I’m hoping we can help and do our part by sending supplies that they currently do not have access to.”
Many teachers at our school have been involved in hurricanes and have suffered from them, one of those teachers being Dr. Cardona. Dr. Cardona moved here last year after she went through hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. At the time she said that she was living in an apartment building on the third floor and she said that she wasn’t too worried because her building had storm shutters. She decided to stay in her building and wait out the storm as did most of her neighbors. She explained that the winds were so strong that she had to push against the door so it wouldn’t blow open. She said once the storm rotated, the winds against the door calmed down. After an hour of pushing against the door she stepped back, and then water started pouring in through her windows. She said, “It looked like the windows were bending, water was coming through the window frame as if someone was hosing it down. My apartment got flooded from all the windows and I lived on the third floor.” Thankfully Dr. Cardona and her family made it through okay and everyone was safe, but once the storm was over, that’s when things really got crazy.
Dr. Cardona explained that people started stealing from the stores that were still standing and committing violent crimes, eventually they put out a curfew for the town and there was to be no one on the streets after 6:00 pm. That is why these things we asked for, in this hurricane relief drive are so important, because after a hurricane people don’t have them and sometimes that leads to them committing crimes to get what they need. But by us helping we are hoping that will not happen. If we help out just a little bit then that’s one less thing they would have to worry about, and it would keep people safer. We ended up collecting a lot of items for our Relief drive and thankfully we were able to donate it all to people who really need it. Thank you to everyone who donated.
