What do the holidays mean to you?
All around the world, people are celebrating a variety of different holidays, depending on culture and religion. Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa, amongst others are traditions that families around the globe celebrate every year. They all get together, share time together as a family, making memories, and so much more. Everyone has different traditions, some open Christmas presents the 24th of December, others open them at midnight, and others open them up Christmas morning. No matter what the holiday is, they all have something in common, to spend time with your family, which is one of the best things that can be done.
In Timber Creek High School, there’s a great variety of different religions and cultures. One of TC’s students, Jillian Jarvis, freshman, celebrates Christmas with her family every year. Everyone celebrates and spends this time of the year differently. “I plan on going to Vermont for Christmas. All of my family members are there and we always have a big party to make the holidays better and more memorable” says Jarvis. She goes to Vermont every year to spend the holidays, where she used to live. She says that she spends around a week there, before returning back to her home, here in Orlando. She likes going there as she doesn’t see her family much, only twice or three times a year, so whenever she goes and sees them, she gets excited and is happy to see her family together again.
On the other hand, another student, Santiago Charry, freshman, stays home for the holidays most of the time. Charry says “I stay home for the holidays, as family usually comes over. I don’t think it is really necessary to go to a fancy trip for the holidays, the only thing we really need is your family around you and spending your time with them” With only 2 weeks off of school, his family always comes down from Colombia, where he’s from. They go to a lot of Disney parks, having a big family dinner afterwards, and sharing their time together, sharing stories and experiences, having a good time.
Finally, Emily Salmons, freshman, thinks that the best part of the holidays is the valuable spent time with family and friends. Her grandparents normally drive down to spend the holidays with her parents and brother, where they celebrate Christmas. “Christmas is mostly about being good to others, generous, charitable, giving, and spending time with family and friends and enjoying each other’s company at this time of the year” Salmons says. It’s not about what you get, but what you give back and the memories made throughout this time of the year. Holidays are a joyous time for everyone, and the best way to spend it is by spending time with your family and friends, creating amazing memories that will forever be remembered.
