Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a movie that came out in 2017 and is a second installment in the Jumanji franchise.
The first movie centered on young Alan Parrish, who becomes trapped in a board game while playing with his best friend Sarah Whittle in 1969. Twenty-six years later, siblings Judy and Peter Shepherd find the game, begin playing and then unwittingly release the now-adult Alan, played by Robin Williams. After tracking down Sarah, the quartet resolves to finish the game in order to reverse all of the destruction it has caused.
Set 21 years after the end of the first movie, it follows four teenagers who are sucked into the Jumanji video game as the characters they chose and must overcome the game’s magical power to win the game and return home.
Most students I’ve asked who’ve seen the movies said that they preferred the new movie over the 1995 version. Samantha Alvarado, a junior, says, “we are more familiar with the actors” and she thinks this makes the movie more enjoyable across a larger demographic. Sophomore David Zerbian says he likes them both equally. He says that the original is iconic, while the new one has more action and is funnier. Rafael Quinos says that the second movie is “more modern with more modern actors.” These students seem to value the comedy that was lacking in the original movie.
