On March 16th, 2018 a film that would change the LGBTQ+ community forever, “Love,Simon” hit the movie theaters across the globe. A 109 minute film sharing a coming of age story, and a coming out story all set in high school. This movie did big numbers making close to $43 million across all box offices. This soon enough, became everyone’s favorite film.
This film is about a young man named Simon Spier and his friends climbing along their high school journey while Simon struggles with one big secret, he is gay. He struggles with even telling himself the truth about his sexuality until someone from his school confesses on their school gossip website that they are gay as well. Finally, Simon has someone to relate to and he builds up the courage to come out to this anonymous person from their school “Blue”. Throughout the school year Simon and “Blue” develop a relationship.
But this movie isn’t just a classic coming of age story, this is one of the first movies that has a homosexual relationship in it that is actually romantic and doesn’t include abusive conflicts. This movie means so much to the LGBTQ+ communtiy, they never have many movies to relate to which is unfair since their is so many movies about a boy and a girl falling in love. Many people had the courage to come out to their family and friends after the impact of the film. The main star of this film Nick Robinson (Simon) saw this impact first hand when his younger brother came out to him and his family during the filming of the movie. This movie has gave people the courage and bravery to come out to their family, which is why this movie is so important.
Sophomore Emily Dasilva gives her thoughts and says the movie “made my heart happy.” She says the film was so good and thinks it sent a really good message overall. Sophomore Madyson Wanting describes the movie as “fun and charming.” She thinks that this movie is a great way for the LGBTQ+ to relate.
