Cross Country Meet Brings Competition
Last weekend, on September 14, the boys and girls cross country teams competed at the St. Cloud Invitational. This race took place at St. Cloud High School. Medals were awarded to the top ten in varsity races, and trophies were given to the varsity team champions and runners-up. The girls’ varsity race began at 7:30 AM, with the boys’ varsity beginning at 8:00 AM. Junior Varsity was combined into one race at 8:30 AM.
Before the meet, superstar sophomore Amber Schulz explained, “I think it’s important to not get too caught up in one race because they are all different and you can’t be your best at every meet! I like to take the bad races as a lesson and the good races as an experience for the future!” Schulz competed in the Junior Olympics, is a two-time All American Athlete, and placed 26th in States. She finished first in the Varsity girls’ 5000 meter run at St. Cloud last weekend. When asked about how she practices in preparation for these races, she said, “To me it’s important to not overwork the body and to keep mileage low to focus more on speed and fast twitch muscles. I also am prioritizing rest and good recovery to make sure my muscles can repair and I can perform to my best ability.”
Coach Halsey said, “The boys and girls cross country teams had excellent races all the way around at the St. Cloud Invitational. Majority of our athletes ran personal best or season best times.” Coach Halsey is also a teacher at Timber Creek, teaching APC Pre-Calculus Honors and AP Calculus AB. Assisting Halsey are Coach Salazar who teaches AP World History and Coach Inglis, who teaches Physical Education.
This meet has been a huge success for all Timber Creek teams. The girls’ varsity team finished first place out of 15 teams, and brought home the trophy. Some standouts were Amber Schultz who finished first, Daria Cuellar-Hernandez in sixth, and Vivian Byrnes who placed eighth. The boys’ varsity team finished in fifth out of nineteen teams, falling to competitive teams including Windermere, St. Cloud, and Dr. Phillips. Our boys’ junior varsity team came in second out of eleven, and the girls came in second out of sixth. Here’s to another victory, Wolves!
