The NBA 2K video game series is considered by many to be the best simulation sports game on the market, and has earned this title in part with its year-in year-out improvements to the game. This year was no exception, as 2K Sports raised the bar on itself once again.
My Career
The My Career mode, which allows you to create a player and embark on your own NBA journey, has long been the flagship mode of the NBA 2K series. This year, the mode was updated significantly. The rookie showcase and draft have been removed and you now start your career in January as an undrafted free agent, playing for 10-day contracts. This change has definitely improved the mode, now allowing players to choose which team they want to play for, instead of being drafted by a random team. The new storyline also now includes at least one real player’s voice for every NBA team, who will mentor players before and after games. This is a great update from last year, where the players simply had subtitles and didn’t even move their mouths.
The one downside to the mode is the face scan feature which, in theory, allows you to enter your face into the game. Many people, however, posted pictures online of common malfunctions, creating hideous looking faces. My game still won’t even recognize my face to start scanning.
Grade: A-
Despite some drawbacks, My Career is an overall success and improvement from last year’s version.
MyGM
The MyGm mode debuted on NBA 2k14 and received lots of criticism for its lack of customization and reliance on Virtual Currency. This year, however, it has vastly improved. VC is replaced with a ranking system, and all abilities, such as lineup changes and player roles, are available for modification from the start. A new player scouting system has also been added, making the game feel much more realistic. You can also bring prospects in for workouts, and access various mock drafts. Players should look to hire a good scout to ensure you aren’t drafting a player with a low ceiling or with injury concerns looming.
Grade: B-
The mode still has some issues to hammer out. Owner goals do not always make sense, dialogue is typically cheesy, but the mode is moving in the right direction.
MyLeague
A re-imagined version of the Association (last seen on NBA 2k13), MyLeague gives players complete control and customization of the NBA for up to 80 seasons. Virtually every detail of the league can be edited, from cap level to team re-signing aggression. This mode is similar to MyGm, but excludes all player demands and conversations, for those who want to just have fun instead of a realistic experience. For example, using MyLeague, you could put Lebron James’ Cavs, Magic Johnson’s Lakers, and Michael Jordan’s Bulls in the same division and see who comes out on top.
Grade: A+
Overall, this mode is exactly what fans have been asking for.
Overall
NBA 2k15 has improved in about every category. The game play is better than ever, My Career continues to wow fans, MyGm has made significant improvements, and MyLeague has given fans full customization. While there is still room for improvement, this game is the best so far in the NBA 2K series.
