Helping the Homeless Club Runs Plant Drive

On Saturday, December 4th, Timber Creek’s Helping the Homeless club organized a plant drive, collecting herb and vegetable plants, along with bags of soil. They ended up collecting about 14 plants and 11 packs of soil, which they proceeded to plant in their garden. Inevitably, when the plants are ready to be harvested, they will be donated to shelters to be used for food.

Helping the Homeless (HTH) has community events most Saturday mornings, giving members the opportunity to gain several service hours. President of HTH, Christopher Lê, said, “Most of the plants we have, we actually rely on donations from members.” The entirety of these events is student run, and the plant drive went without a hitch! The turnout for the plant drive passed expectations, and as soon as they plants are ready to be harvested, they will be brought to local homeless shelters.

Though the turnout for the plant drive was incredibly successful, the club officers found that other drives and events gain more support. Events like #lunchbagOrlando, in which students bring bagged lunch to distribute to homeless people, tend to gather more people’s attention. President Lê said, “There’s more turnout for the book and clothing drive probably because it’s easier to do.” Regardless, the plant drive received much support

Helping the Homeless members find these events rather enjoyable, while also being incredibly helpful to their community. Sophomore Chelsea Ali, a member of HTH, said, “I seriously enjoy doing the events, I love helping however I can, and HTH makes it so fun!” The events are so successful because they are able to provide enjoyment to their members, while simultaneously giving back to their community.
