Hard Work & Training: No Secret Formula

With the boys track season starting soon around the corner, in the month of February, players are preparing to get back in shape. From running on a treadmill to weightlifting, players prepare to perform at 100% next year. Timber Creek HS has some of the top performers in Orange County’s Track & Field events.
For starters, track events range from 100 meters, 300 meters, 600 meters, 1600 meters, 200m hurdles, shot put, and long jump. Due to the variations in events players are required to do different training regiments to best prepare for their competing event. Senior, Ethan Vanderdor who competes in the 400 and 800 relay said, “I like to go for distance runs and do weight training.” Other ways to get back in shape include doing moderate intensity cardio, strength training exercises, plyometric exercises, and making healthy food choices.
Consequently during the off-season senior, Lucas Vanderdor likes to combine swimming, using the elliptical machine and running on a treadmill to stay in track form. “I put in two hours per day each day,” said Lucas. Many of the track and field athletes also play other sports during the off season such as football, wrestling, and lacrosse. All sports which require intense training and dedication. As senior Ethan said, “You need to have the mental fortitude to work through the pain.” But the real key factor that sets athletes apart is “just good work ethic and consistency,” as stated by senior Lucas.
