The votes were cast and the September Student Athletes of the Month are Sophia Hwang and Diego Rivera.
Sophia Hwang is in 11th grade, and is a part of the Timber Creek Girl’s Golf team. She has been playing golf for seven years and plays in competitions outside of school as well. Hwang remarked on how happy she was to have won Student of the Month, seeing as how she has been nominated twice before but never winning until now. She feels honored to have been nominated by her coaches and to have won. When asked about how she felt playing for Timber Creek, Hwang said, “I love playing, but I feel that the Timber Creek girls golf team should get more recognition because we won districts last year and no one knew. Even when I was a freshman, no one noticed when we took second, which is also great. This year we advance to regionals and I’m proud of my team because a lot of the girls on our team don’t have much experience playing golf, but have improved so much just this year.”
Diego Rivera is a junior and apart of the Timber Creek Boy’s Cross Country team. He has been running cross country since his freshman year. His fastest time was 16:54 in the 5k. He hopes to attract the attention of colleges and earn scholarships through cross country. Rivera believes that the cross country team doesn’t get the recognition they deserve, especially since they work hard practicing and running in parks, came in second at districts, and traveling almost every weekend. When asked about how he felt winning student athlete of the month, Rivera said, “It feels pretty good to win, and I’m very thankful to everyone who voted for me and my coaches who nominated me. I worked hard and trained over the summer so it’s nice to know my hard work paid off.”
