Excited. This season is looking promising to freshman Kian Hugh, who will be trying out. She has previous experience, but this will be her first high school experience. She said, “I want to represent my school and I want to get better.”

Girls’ Varsity and Junior Varsity are to Start Soon

The 2018-2019 girls’ basketball season is coming up for this winter at Timber Creek, along with the dreaded tryouts. This year’s Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman tryouts start on October 29, with callbacks the following Tuesday and finals Wednesday. These will take place in the Gym 2:30-5, with Coach Freddie Cintron. In order for students to try out, they must have an updated sports physical registered with the athletic training staff.

Last year, our Varsity team ended the season with a 23-5 record, and JV with a 15-4 score. Head Coach Freddie Cintron said, “Both had very promising seasons last year. I think they were just excited, just ready to compete, they worked extremely hard so they wanted to make sure that their hard work paid off. There was a lot of tenacity, a lot of courage while they were playing.” Assistant coaches Joel Vega, Reggie Cox, Jeff Sloey, and Connor Buckridge are looking forward to this season’s incoming teams. The final varsity team will have about 12 students, junior varsity with around 10, and the new freshman team with 8 or 9. This year, there will once again be a freshman team after not having one in a while. Cintron sais, “We want freshmen to not only enjoy playing, but learn how to play. For the most part, we feel pretty confident that we can teach kids how to play as long as they try.” Freshmen are not expected to have any experience, but upperclassmen are required to have some in organized basketball.

When asked about the tryouts, freshman Kian Hugh said, “I am feeling a little nervous but also excited. I think I feel this way because it’s my first time trying out for a high school team.” This reflects the other students trying out for both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams, who will be put under a lot of pressure when the season starts. While some students may be fresh on the courts, some like Hugh have been preparing for this upcoming event. When asked how she is preparing for the tryouts, she said, “I am training with my AAU coach and teammates on the outside courts.” The excitement for the next season’s teams is gaining, with only a few weeks left to prepare.

This season has many events planned, including the Winter Sports Kickoff. This will be on Friday, November 16 from 6:30 to 8:30. The first official game is November 21, but the first home game will be Tuesday, November 29 against Jones. Cintron said, “We hope to have an exciting season this year,” and this reflects the students’ feelings as well.
