Student-athletes are preparing for spring tryouts

As the spring season approaches, Timber Creek athletes are getting ready to showcase their talents on the field and court. The infamous “I can’t, I have practice”, or “I have a game” is making a comeback as lacrosse, tennis, volleyball, water polo, baseball, softball, flag football, and weightlifting athletes begin their journey in the spring of 2020. Whether you are a freshman trying out a new hobby, or a varsity veteran, tryouts are always nerve wracking. Seeing new faces and getting back in the swing of things is always hard.
As students with bulky equipment bags flood the hallways, the pressure is on. Trying to trudge through a full day of school and then playing for hours on the court/field is a skill that newcomers, like freshmen, have to get used to. Being sore and walking up and down Timber Creek’s lengthy hallways is not an easy task.
But for these athletes, it’s worth it. The adrenalin rush that you get when winning a crucial point, or beating a rival team is all worth the endless hours of practice it takes. Freshman Maddy Lopez commented on this feeling, “Seeing everyone coming together as a team is so satisfying,” Lopez was a very successful swimmer on Timber Creek’s varsity swim team and has been a dedicated swimmer ever since she was in elementary school. “Everyone on the team is so supportive and is always willing to cheer you on. We’re one big family, we have ups and downs and always continue to get better, on and off-season,” she said. Lopez is trying out for girl’s water polo this spring and is excited to be apart of a team again. “Being a part of a team has helped me grow as a person. I love the sense that we’re all in it together no matter what happens. The more we work together, the better we get.” Lopez also noted the team’s dedication to the sport. “Being a freshman on the team has also taught me the amount of commitment these upperclassmen have put toward being on the team. High school swim is such a big part of their lives, which is something I admire a lot. ”
Trying out though isn’t always easy, no matter how good you are at the sport. Lopez talked about her feelings towards water polo tryouts. “I’m honestly a bit nervous. I pretty comfortable with the team and the coach, but getting out there for the first time is going to be weird.” Freshman Lucy Edwards is also trying out this year’s lacrosse season. “I really hope I make the team this year. I’m a bit rusty but I’m excited to see my friends again,” Edwards said. The dynamic of being a part of a team is one of the main factors that makes high school sports so enjoyable. The immense amount of support students put into our school’s teams makes being on a team so much more special. Hearing Timber Creek’s signature chants from the crowd on the field brings the best out of our players. This upcoming spring season is going to be the best one yet. Prepare to storm many fields and scream at the top of your lungs in support of your favorite wolf this upcoming season.
