What Timber Creek has to offer when it comes to art

To graduate from high school, you need 24 or more credits. To get those credits, you have to take a certain number of classes. Of course, you must take a certain number of core classes (English, math, science, history), but you must also have to take a certain number of electives, which include 1 performing arts class. Usually, when people hear that they have to take a performing arts class, they get scared and just take drawing 1 because “it’s easy,” or chorus because “my mom has always wanted me to sing.” One class that students can take is a musical theater class.
In a musical theater class, you sing, dance, and act. It’s the theater, chorus, and dance elective combined! “I’ve been dancing since I was 2,” said sophomore Olivia Wright, “but I’ve always wanted to expand what I can do with my dancing. So I decided to take musical theater so I can learn to dance and sing.” Every Tuesday, students have dance during class time where they learn dance combinations and improve their technique. You work with your classmates to create, choreograph, and perform numbers. But the class is more than just singing and dancing; you learn the importance of storytelling, improvisation, auditioning skills, and learning music.
There are also lots of musical theater opportunities outside of the elective class. For example, during spring break, select students went to Tampa to compete in the 2025 Florida State Thespian Competition. “My large group and my friends put together got a perfect score at districts, so we went to states and also won a superior! But even though that’s fun, doing all of the masterclasses and talking to other people from different schools is probably the best part,” said sophomore Calista Inmon. To qualify for the state competition, you must compete at the district level competition, and earn a superior for your thespy. A thespy is the type of performance you decide to take to the competition (this includes a solo, monologue, large group, duet, scene, etc). Not only does the program offer this opportunity, but currently the theater program is putting on the show “Alice by Heart.” Students from the theater program can try out for the show and are assigned roles to play. Another show will be performed later in the year by the 7th- period musical theater class, called “Songs for a New World.” This elective has so many opportunities, inside and outside of class time.
Musical theater is a fun, interactive, engaging, and memorable class. The class brings together students with the same passion. You gain a deep appreciation for the cultural significance of theater. The program helps build confidence, make new friends, develop vocal techniques, and learn life skills. With plenty of
performance opportunities, you get to show your talent. This class is an enjoyable and enriching experience that prepares you for theatrical moment.
