And a 5...6...7...8! The Orchestra plays some christmas tunes during one of the Prism concert rehearsals. Orchestra student, Yerlian Perkins said ,” My favorite part about being in Orchestra is being able to get my mind off of things through music. I believe music can cheer anyone up. I also love the people in orchestra, they are reliable and you can count on them, they are like family.”

This year’s annual prism concert was one you did not want to miss. Full of holiday cheer, it was a beautiful show celebrating this magical season. All the performing arts departments got together and put on quite a performance. Many of the students had to stay countless afternoons for months to put this very perfected and well organized show together! It was evident all the hard work and time put in and the outcome was a success. This concert definitely put the crowd in a jolly mood!

Many of the students as well as teachers in the program look forward to this concert months in advance. Dance teacher, Mrs. Perry, said she always looks forward to this concert because it really showcases every programs talent as well as hard work.  When watching this performance, the execution is flawless. From beginning to end the show runs seamlessly and efficiently, almost seeming effortless. It is almost evident how much attention was paid to precise details as well as finishing touches. When speaking to Mariel Torres, Elite Dance Captain, she explained more in depth just how much preparation was put into the student choreographed dances. Torres said,” We spent a lot of time preparing for our prism piece and making sure our dance not only encompassed technical aspects but still had a fun, light, Christmas mood throughout.

In this show it is also surprising to see how many students were apart of multiple performing art programs. Seeing as to two or more programs means double or triple the amount of rehearsals, time commitment, and dedication overall it was quite impressive. When being asked with band student(wind ensemble) and elite team dancer, Kaitlyn Wix, what it was like to be apart of more than one program she stated,” I love being apart of two performing arts programs because they benefit the other program. Being in band, I have learned musicality and how to count music which translates in coming up with choreography in dance. In addition, the relationships I’ve made throughout both band and dance programs are ones that I know I’ll keep through college and life.” Many students in multiple programs shared the same ideas of applying what they learned in one program into the other; it all comes full circle but most importantly it was the bonds they created that made this busy schedule worthwhile.

By the same token, one of the most outstanding things that makes prism special from other concerts is programs collaborating and working together to create a magnificent performance that’s unique.  For example, chorus student Laura Lengua got together with the jazz band for a breathtaking performance. Lengua and the jazz band serenaded the crowd with there beautiful melody “White Christmas”. The crowd might not be used to band and chorus collaborating but it was definitely something fresh and exciting. This is just one example of two programs fusing together, but these types of collaborations could be seen throughout the night making this concert worthwhile.

Lastly, the show was wrapped up with the famous sing along. This famous sing along is a medley of many popular songs which the audience as well as all the programs join in on, making it a real crowd pleaser. This medley without a doubt leaves the night on a high note. That being said this terrific, groundbreaking show is a must see and even if you missed it this season, just remember there is always next year!
