Despite starting the season well and entering Friday’s game on a four game winning streak, the Wolves struggled against Edgewater High School Oct. 10. For the second time in three years, they lost their homecoming matchup.
With a final score of 17-21, the Wolves had trouble scoring in the second half. The running game was shut down due to senior running back Jacques Patrick cramping up. Despite the Wolves having a 17-7 halftime lead, the Eagles completed a comeback on a final minute touchdown.
The defense had come through all game, forcing punt after punt. But with the game on the line they allowed Edgewater to convert a big fourth down and then run a touchdown for a four point lead.
“We played well all night. Obviously the last drive we gave up some crucial third and fourth down conversions. We missed tackles. But if we come out next week and play University the way we played tonight, we’re good,” said defensive coordinator Marc Jackson.
The loss was a massive letdown for the team. Senior linebacker Ryan Hutchison talked about the games great significance to the team. “It’s the biggest part of the week for us. We love playing in this game,” said Hutchison.
With another big game matchup versus University High School next Friday, the Wolves need to get healthy. They are down to their third and fourth string defensive backs, which could be why the Eagles’ passing attack was clicking.
At 4-2, this next game could define the Wolves’ season. It is a big spot against a tough rival opponent. A win could mean an impressive 5-2 record. A loss would drop them to a mediocre 4-3.
“It’s a big game because it’s in district. Edgewater doesn’t matter. Olympia doesn’t matter. It’s the games against University and Winter Park the matter. We want to win these games because the district title is what’s important,” said senior wide receiver Tyler Womick.
