After losing their first regular season games against Dr. Phillips on Aug. 29, the Wolves were amped to take the field Friday night against Boone. Last season, the team ran the ball all over Boone, racking up over 60 points.
This year they would play Braves at home, and were ready to repeat their Boone bashing. “We were super excited and ready to repeat what we did last season against them,” said senior wide receiver Tyler Womick.
They did just that. Senior running back Jacques Patrick ran for 305 yards and 5 touchdowns against the Boone defense. At halftime he already had over 250 yards. The Boone defense could not handle Patrick’s physical running. His yards after contact almost matched his total rushing output. The rain that settled over Orlando Friday night certainly did not help the visitors either.
With the combination of the rain, Patrick’s bruising style of running, and the rowdy Purple People, Boone appeared to be overwhelmed. “We definitely affected the game. Momentum swung in our favor when we started chants and got really hype,” said senior Carrie Lawrence.
Although Boone did have a positive play here or there on offense, the Wolves defense did a good job attacking and keeping the pressure on the Braves. “We’re getting better each week. We played well but there were a few mistakes we need to clean up,” said assistant coach Marc Jackson.
Next, the guys will take on another rival, East River on Sep. 12. With the win over Boone, they will enter the game with a perfect league record. The Wolves could be on their way to a special season.
