Sun, Sand, and Sleep!

By Lenaia Powell

The moment we have all been waiting for has finally arrived– Spring Break! Homework is no longer a concern, grades go temporarily unnoticed by parents, and best of all, being able to sleep in! Unfortunately, it’s over now, leaving much to be desired from students. Some people took advantage of Florida’s extensive vacation opportunities, while others enjoyed the small things in life that are ordinarily limited by the routines of school.

The majority of students had some sort of project, test, or other assignments they were most likely dreading before the eventual break–a chance to relax. Maleia Ebright, a senior, shared her personal obstacles while maintaining (self-reliant) optimism. “Well, I haven’t done any of my work in government so… yeah. I just gotta get it all done by Thursday. I don’t know how I’m gonna accomplish that but I’m going to. Because I’m amazing and I always find a way out of horrible situations like this.”

Following that, Barbara Heissner, a junior, and Emma Taylor, a senior, both didn’t quite have a handle on their work for AP Art Studio, as both were concerned about turning in their concentrations before Thursday. Elizabeth Tate, another senior, had other worries as well, “We have a big test in macroeconomics that I’m really dreading, probably gonna take an L,” she expressed, laughing over her obvious stress.

Unfortunately, sometimes school is an inescapable task. Over break, Emma Taylor and Emma Treadwell both needed to read for Mrs. Houvouras’ class. In addition, Emma Taylor and Elizabeth Tate both had online school– or FLVS– but they tried not to let that get in the way of their downtime. But when Maleia Ebright was asked if she would be doing school work, she blatantly replied, “School? On spring break? What is this? No!”

Despite everything that stood in the way of students and sweet leisure, making plans for the next week certainly wasn’t hard. Most of the individuals interviewed weren’t planning on going out of state, the only exception being Barbara. When asked what her plans were, she responded with, “Besides hanging out with Maleia, probably go to New Jersey to see my family.” According to her, she was excited to leave the hot weather behind.

Connor Talley, a freshman, took advantage of this hot weather and went to Aquatica and Gatorland, saying going to Aquatica was his favorite part of the week. In addition, a not-so-funny but also kind of funny incident almost ruined his fun, “I almost got a concussion at Aquatica, from hitting my head on a slide.”

Speaking of the weather, I’m sure a number of students were disappointed by the big thunderstorm and tornado warning on Tuesday of the break. Imagine how many people

were looking forward to the beach or pool, only to have to stay inside! A bummer, certainly.

After the break, however, some people recounter not going out much, if at all. Senior Armani Boyd didn’t end

up going to the party she planned on going to on Friday, but she did go to her boyfriend’s house pretty much every day of the week. Leeann Mcomber, a sophomore, said that really all she did was sleep.

Lily Jackson, a senior, went out of state for a volleyball tournament– to Philly, and it was snowing! “My favorite part was probably throwing snowballs ‘cause I’ve never been in enough snow to throw a snowball– so it was my first time,” Unfortunately, her team’s plans to get first place went out the window, as they got third, but that’s a pretty solid standing nonetheless, and I’m sure the experience lifted the team’s spirits.

Interestingly enough, when asked how they would rate the week on a scale of one to ten, everyone said eight! Well, there was one eight and a half, but let’s round that down to an eight. Overall, spring break seemed to be pretty fulfilling for everyone.

Looking back, maybe we all wish we had done something more with our spring break, and now we’re back at school with piles of homework being dumped on us and report cards soon to be given out. With spring break being the last considerable amount of time off for the school year, now all that’s left to look forward to is summer!
