Fresh Meat

Your first year of high school can go two ways: not being involved in anything because you’re startled by this new environment, or being involved in almost anything and everything because you’re just that kid. Freshman, Kendall Lindsay is just that kid—an overachiever. Any sport or club a freshman can participate in, expect Lindsay to be in it. Several of the clubs she’s involved in, like FFA and Debate, she has experienced in middle school. Although not many freshmen—or high schoolers even, have a general idea of what they want, but Kendall says she has an idea of how she wants the next couple of years to go, and quite frankly she is doing a great job keeping up with extracurriculars, on top of her honors and AP classes.

What are you involved in here at Apopka?

I’m in Debate, FFA, Beta, swimming, and flag football.

What are you involved in outside of school?

I do most of my activities in school—those usually keep me extremely busy. Outside of school I occasionally work at a family friend’s restaurant by helping with events and festivals. I also help take care of their animals as well as my own.

Why did you choose to participate in these particular activities?

Debate is something I’d always pictured myself doing in high school, FFA is a club I’ve been heavily involved in since 7th grade, and the two sports I had chosen were the ones that interested me the most. All in all, I do these activities to keep me moving and motivated.

Has it been hard balancing your schedule? If so, how do you manage it?

It’s been a challenge, to say the least. I’ve always been a very active person so I guess you can say I’ve grown accustomed to a busy schedule, but this year has tested me for sure. During sports seasons, I often had to choose which activities took precedence others and act accordingly. I had to greatly improve my time management skills and plan ahead a lot– it definitely is possible to do all these things and not go insane as long as you’re loving what you’re doing.

As a freshman, do you have an idea of how you want the rest of your high school experience to go?

I have some idea—first off because I’m getting better at some of the activities I do, I have to dedicate more time to them. This means that I may have to drop things that don’t benefit me as much in the long run as far as my goals go. Secondly, I am enrolled in an extremely rigorous schedule for my sophomore year and will have to spend more time hitting the books. Lastly, I hope to have more fun with my friends as we get cars and freedom to do things in the future…
