I’m Not Gay

I have walked through the streets in a black dress and bright red wig for a little fun, and I have had my sexuality questioned more times than I can count. While standing on a man’s front porch with fake boobs and a Halloween bag in my hand, I was judged just for my choice of clothing that broke the status quo. Despite the judgement they may face, people of all ages wear non-traditional garb to express themselves every day.

I know what you’re thinking, but I’m not gay.

Why would somebody think I’m gay just for a Halloween costume? Unfortunately those who are afraid of change think like that and refuse to give someone a second thought after their initial assumption. Maybe it is time to realize a person can dress to represent how they truly feel and a guy can throw on a hula skirt if he pleases.

Even though I’ll stuff socks in a sports bra for a joke, it does not mean that some people do not do it in their everyday life. Plenty of people cross-dress for fashion or to make statements and that says nothing about their sexuality other than that is what they enjoy to wear. There are of course people who use clothes to feel more comfortable with themselves and those individuals should not have to worry about being judged.

People have their own reason for dressing the way they do and should not face prejudice. Those who choose to wear clothes for personal reasons deserve respect and those who choose to have a quick laugh deserve respect too. So next time you see a person experimenting with some stylish clothes, leave your assumptions at the door.
