Over a month of the 2019-2020 school year will be spent at home. The experience of doing school work at home is new for some, and it can be a struggle. So here’s tips to stay focused while working in pajamas.

The relaxed setting of home can keep students from being productive. According to an article by DreamHost, there are 16 ways to stay focused while working at home. While all of these can be effective, four of them are the most useful. Those are the: Having a dedicated workspace, creating a schedule, staying off social media, and avoiding procrastination.

The importance of a dedicated workspace is obvious. The reason a lot of people have an easier time completing work in class rather than home is because a classroom is an organized room built for focus, while a bedroom is made for comfort. The last thing a person wants in a room is geometry but, because of extended time off, students have little choice. Finding a place where students can focus is invaluable in getting work done. Anything from a kitchen table to a quiet room can be used, as long as it’s helpful in keeping students focused. Similarly, creating a schedule is an easy way to keep the school feeling at home. Splitting up work in a way that works best is very helpful. Some might go by periods, or do one class a day, or any sort of mix that keeps the students focused.

So, the study zone is set up. Now it’s time to get to work, right? Well there are a lot more distractions to come. Social media is a quick way to lose hours of work time. With so many students having portals to an entire world in their pockets it is very easy to lose track of time while scrolling through instagram. For the time when students are trying to focus, staying off social media is a must. Spending those few hours of work without a phone can make that time way more efficient. The use of social media is just a part of the last tip, avoid procrastination. Procrastination happens at school, but it is even easier to succumb to procrastination when students are stuck in their houses. Tackling work head-on and getting it done is incredibly important. Work hard, play hard.

A sudden shift to online work is going to be hard for some students. In this tough time, it is important to work hard and use these tips to complete all your assigned work.
