Forgotten Holidays: Three Kings Day

Plenty of beautiful holidays get overlooked every year. Among them is the feast celebrated on January 6th known as Feast of the Epiphany, or Three Kings Day.

Originating from Spanish and Latin American culture, the holiday is rooted in Christian beliefs. The holiday is based on the story of three kings visiting Jesus after his birth. This imagery is shown in the holiday’s many traditions. Children often receive gifts and candies that are said to be given to them by the three kings, similarly to how they gave gifts to baby Jesus. Other small traditions have been adapted from the story, like leaving grass or salt for the camels that the kings ride on, similar to cookies for Santa. Ornieliz Rosado is a sophomore of Puerto Rican heritage who celebrates Three Kings Day with her family. “It is so fun. I get food and toys, and it’s just fun ‘cause I get to be with my family,” Rosado said.

Celebrations spread throughout Spain, Latin America, and parts of the United States. Even here in Orlando, Three Kings Day can be found throughout the city. Festivities fill the Central Florida air at places like SeaWorld’s Three Kings Celebration, January 4-6. You can often find activities, food, and plenty of fun that honors the age-old tradition. Many of East River’s own students celebrate this overlooked holiday, so if the celebration is new to you head out and find a way to embrace the tradition and try new things.
