Shooter: A Photographer’s Story

When pictures are taken right they can instantly make jaws drop. Perhaps a picture is of something people see every single day, but the photographer worked their genius taking the picture from the right angle. Maybe they wanted to highlight something that stood out to them. Photographers also often edit the picture to exaggerate certain features of the subject. Daniel Dotson, junior, is that photographer. Dotson has taken pictures of cars which people see and drive every day that take them back to the first time they ever saw it; glistening with the sun reflecting off of it and all of the angles perfectly exaggerated. Daniel got into photography in a rather unorthodox way, not what most people think of when they hear an origin story. Dotson started off by signing up for Photography I, where he didn’t expect to grow a passion. “I signed up for Photography I because I thought it would be an easy A,” Dotson said.

Over time Daniel has evolved into a better photographer, videographer, and editor. Some may think that the picture above is about as good as it gets, but for Dotson it’s never good enough. “I’ve really improved and I feel like I have set into a more street, pop culture style. I’ve set more into the trends and modifying pictures tastefully instead of just throwing a handful of filters on a picture like I did when I first began. I started focusing more on the subtle angles that most pictures wouldn’t capture,” Dotson said. Dotson’s work has gotten exceedingly more breathtaking as time has progressed.

Photography has led Dotson down many positive paths, from friendships to a new passion for cars. “Cars are my favorite thing to photograph because a lot of my friends have cool cars so it’s easy to find one to shoot,” Dotson said. Dotson has only been doing photography for less than a year and has come such a long way in the short amount of time. “Photography has led me to many positive relationships and new interests. The fact that photography has opened the door into the car world which I now adore so much is astonishing. Photography and cars go hand in hand so much because it’s all about the angles.”

Dotson has been editing for a Youtube channel called Octane and Zipties. His photography can mainly be found on his Instagram account, @xaniel_photo.
