Runner’s Guide to Athletic Clothing

As a runner, the clothes that I wear should be comfortable to move in. Depending on your outfit, certain clothes can restrict you. So try wearing the proper attire, as it can help you on your run.

Do not wear cotton! If there’s only one important thing that you should take away from this article, it should be that wearing cotton is a BIG no-no. Wearing cotton absorbs the moisture, making you feel damp and hot as you sweat. For me, wearing cotton is very uncomfortable. It makes me feel super hot and heavy. Instead, try wearing other fabrics like nylon, polyester, polypropylene, and spandex. These fabrics make you feel more dry and comfortable. From personal experience, polyester makes me feel the most comfortable and is my favorite type of fabric to wear.

What you wear also depends on what weather you’re running in. For me, I mostly run in the hot sun, so I usually wear short shorts and a shirt. Though, I often take my shirt off if it is very hot. Girl runners should consider wearing a sports bra instead of a shirt in hot weather. But if you are not running in hot sun and instead running in the cold, try wearing multiple layers.  A tank top base layer, a long-sleeve shirt, and a zip-up winter running jacket should be good enough. You should also try wearing something to cover your ears and hands, like a beanie and mittens, because that is where you lose heat the quickest.

Consider wearing a headband. They absorb your sweat, preventing most of it from running down your face and into your eyes.  I love wearing headbands on race days, where i would frequently get sweat in my eyes otherwise.

Try wearing short shorts too. Yes, I know they might look funny and weird (especially if you’re a guy), but wearing short shorts can help you a ton. Short shorts gives your legs more freedom to move. Every time I wear short shorts, it makes my legs feel more free. It feels like you’re running without shorts on.

What you wear can have a huge impact on your run, so make sure you’ve got a good fit when you get fit.

About Kyle Garces

I’m a freshman who loves running all types of distances, but my passion for running comes from running long distances. Running has taught me so much, but it has especially taught me to push through my limits no matter what. Oh and one thing, if I pass out while running, please stop my watch.
