NHS Scholarship
Each year, National Honor Society awards scholarships to 600 student members. This year’s national winner will receive $25,000. National finalists will receive $5,625 each, while semi-finalists will receive $3,200.
NHS Scholarships are one-time, nonrenewable awards payable to U.S. colleges and universities. NHS scholarships may not be used at international schools. The entire award may be applied against your freshman year expenses, or you and your college/university may work together to allocate your award against future years. The scholarship expires after four years.
How can I apply?
NHS seniors in good standing of an active chapter are eligible to apply for a National Honor Society Scholarship. To be eligible, you must be a current 12th grade student who is continuing to meet the selection standards for NHS. Your annual dues must be paid, and your community service hours must be up to date in order to receive a scholarship application.
What is scholarship selection based on?
Scholarship selection is based on the four pillars of NHS—scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Financial need is also a consideration.
Do I have to demonstrate financial need in order to apply?
No. Any NHS senior member in good standing can apply for the NHS Scholarship. Those students who report financial need must demonstrate that through eligibility for the National School Lunch Program or by meeting income eligibility requirements in order for financial need to be considered as part of their application.
Who submits the NHS Scholarship application?
Although the chapter adviser and committee may encourage students to apply, each student is responsible for completing the application and checking on its status.
When are scholarship winners announced?
Notification letters are mailed to winners and their principals in late May.
What is the application deadline for NHS Scholarships?
The student portion of the application must be completed online and all recommendations received by the stated deadlines in order for your application to be considered.
Application Procedure:
- Visit the NHS Scholarship site here.
- Create an account.
- Have your account verified by the Chapter Adviser.
- Complete the student portion of the application. You can make changes to your application until the stated deadline.
- Provide detailed information about activities and experiences related to scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
- Request an Adviser Certification from the NHS Adviser, which acts as a short recommendation form and confirms the applicant is currently in good standing with a local NHS chapter. The adviser certification must be completed in the application portal and no external documents or communications will be accepted.
- Request a Recommendation from one non-adviser, non-family member adult who can speak to the applicant’s commitment to the pillars of NHS. The recommendation must be completed in the application portal and no external documents or communications will be accepted.
