VISUAL ARTS–57th Art and Foliage Festival
This Apopka tradition is a perfect end-of-year opportunity for our art students to show off what they have done during the year. I am so proud of our students and our outstanding art team: Carrie Lieffers, Evan Chabot, Julie Ellington, Abby Kish and Krystal Palmer. Our veteran teachers continue to set the bar high and our two young teachers, Abby and Krystal (sorry, Chabot and Lieffers but you’re no longer the “young teachers”) have done an amazing job this year, jumping in with both feet and really getting some strong work from even the introductory art classes. Every teacher had students win awards. It has been a good year for the art department and I am grateful to work with such professionals.
Here is the list of winners from AHS. If you have these students, please congratulate them (bonus: the Foliage Sertoma member in charge of the school exhibitions was Ann Mixson (those of you who don’t know—Ann was the long time media specialist at Dream Lake Elementary and AHS)).

The AHS Theatre Department is a member of International Cappies. As part of this organization, critics (we have six) are required to attend plays at other participating schools, write and submit a review. We have had several students’ reviews published throughout Central Florida and in the International Cappies magazine. this year. At the end of each year, actors and technicians from each of the plays are nominated for final voting by all of the participating critics from each school.
The five finalists in each category will be announced mid-May. There is a Cappies Gala where the winners are announced in late May (think the Tony Awards).

Last month, Mrs. Shafer, Mr. Powell, and Ms. Miner accompanied 31 students to the District 5 Thespian Festival at Ocoee High School. This year was our largest attended festival with 1,248 theatre students from all the OCPS high schools and Orange County private high schools. This is Drama’s annual competition. There variety of performance and technical categories the students can compete in. This year, we took a total of 21 events. We came home with 11 Superiors (highest rating), 9 Excellents and 1 Good, and the highest honor … BEST OF SHOW for Duet Acting! A huge congratulations to Sheila Smith and Matthew Zenon for their Best of Show performance from the play Doubt by John Patrick Shanley. They performed their winning entry at the closing ceremonies that night.
In addition to our Best of Show winners, Zach Williams garnered a perfect score for his monologues. The tech events do not have best of show winners, they choose the top 3 in each category and Al Smith came in 2nd for their make-up design of Cabaret.
