Tech Center Information

Students interested in attending Orange Technical College for dual enrollment need to pick up an application from room 402.  Students must have a 2.0 GPA in order to apply.  Numerous programs are available including auto and diesel mechanics, medical, culinary, and human services.  This is a great way to jump start a career.

Orange Technical College Mid Florida Campus is sponsoring a STEM EXPO.  Students can explore careers in the science, technology, engineering and math fields.  Many businesses will be on hand for interactive exploration.  Students should see Ms. Anderson in room 402.  If she is not in her office leave you name and student number in her box.

If you or your parents have done any farm work, (nurseries, fruit packing, produce harvesting) in the last two years, YOU may qualify for a scholarship from the Farmworker Career Development Program!

We provide funding for tuition fees, Lab fees, testing, text books, uniforms and supplies.

If interested in doing dual enrollment at one of the local technical campuses, please see Ms. Anderson in room 402B.  She will be visiting classes soon and will hold a dual enrollment night at Apopka in December.

College Visit:  Florida International University

Do you want to attend a top-tier public research university in Miami?  Florida International University (FIU) is coming to Apopka High School on Tuesday, October 10th, during 3rd period for a college presentation.  Juniors and Seniors are invited to register using this link: http://tinyurl.com/ApkFIUVisit.  Passes will be distributed during first period Tuesday morning.  Students without a first period are responsible for picking up their pass from Student Services when they arrive at school.  Registration for this event closes at 2 pm on Monday, 10/9.

College Visit:  Florida Gulf Coast University

Thinking about pursuing a degree related to environmental sustainability?  FL Gulf Coast University is coming to Apopka on Tuesday, 10/17, during 4th period for a college presentation.  Juniors and Seniors are invited to register using this link: http://tinyurl.com/FGCUvisit.  Passes will be distributed during first period on the morning of the event.  Students without a first period are responsible for picking up their pass from Student Services when they arrive at school.  Registration for this event closes at noon on Friday, 10/13.

College Visit and Onsite Admissions Opportunity:  Barry University

Barry University is coming to the Apopka College and Career Center on Tuesday, October 17th, for a college presentation and onsite admissions event during period 6.  Juniors and Seniors are invited to register to attend the event using this link:  http://tinyurl.com/BarryVisit.  Passes will be distributed during first and second periods on the morning of the event.  Registration closes for this event at noon on Friday, 10/13.  Students wanting to participate in onsite admissions will need to order transcripts from Mrs. Mackey in Student Services.

Don’t Fear the FAFSA! 

Seniors and parents, plan now to attend Financial Aid Night, being held on Thursday, October 12th in the Auditorium and the Media Center.  There will be a presentation from 6-7 about financial aid, and from 7-8 we will open the Media Center for families to complete the FAFSA.  We are also offering dinner at 5:15 in the cafeteria for those who would like to eat before the presentation begins.  Click here to register:  http://tinyurl.com/AHSFinancialAid.  Students are asked to bring their laptops and families will need to bring their 2016 tax information—what was filed this past April.  More information about FAFSA can be found at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/.  Students can also register to attend the FSA ID Creation Help Event on 10/12 in the CCR during periods 2-7.  The first 30 students who register for each period will receive a pass during first or second period.

College Planning Sessions

Ms. Metts, our College and Career Specialist, is available beginning Thursday, August 24th, for college planning sessions for students in the Class of 2018!  Whether planning to join the military, go to a two-year college like Valencia or Seminole State, enroll in a tech program at OCPS Tech, or go straight to university, Ms. Metts can take students step-by-step from where they are today, to where they want to be in the fall of 2018.  Ms. Metts encourages students and parents to come together to the appointment when possible, and is available from 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on  Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays in order to accommodate parent schedules.  To make an appointment, please use the following link:  https://msmetts-apk.youcanbook.me/

Not in the Class of 2018?  Never fear, we’ve got you covered at Underclassmen Parent Night, an evening for parents and students in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade where we go over all the necessary steps to take prior to senior year!  Everything from Bright Futures, to campus visits, understanding all postsecondary options—and more– will be presented.  Underclassmen Parent Night will be Thursday, October 5th at 6 p.m. in the AHS Auditorium.

Book Vouchers Available in the CCR

Current Valencia College Dual Enrollment students are required to visit the CCR from August 21 to 23 for their Valencia Book Vouchers.  No appointment is necessary.  Valencia classes begin on Monday, August 28th

Changes to Community Service Procedure

OCPS is bringing its community service requirements for Bright Futures into alignment with Florida state law. The guidelines for OCPS students are:

  1. Obtain the required forms from the school website or your guidance counselor
  2. Develop a written community service plan which addresses a social problem or concern.
  3. Submit the plan to your counselor for approval before you begin your community service.
  4. All community service will begin the summer prior to entering high school.
  5. Submit community service documentation to your counselor upon completion of the approved activity.
