First Grade Learns a Turkey Dance

Students from Mrs. Siler’s and Hill’s class pose with Bert the turkey. Ask them and they can show you the song A Turkey Named Bert – complete with dance moves!

Also, we listened to rhythms Bert said, and translated them into rhythm syllables (DU for quarter note and DU-DAY for paired eighths). What does that even mean? Well, it means that your child can hear rhythms without syllables (clapped, played on an instrument, said on a neutral syllable) and translate that into actual rhythm syllables. Rhythm syllables are important, as they match with written rhythms. So this step is a precursor to being able to sight-read rhythms or dictate (write down) rhythms they hear – or even compose their own rhythms!
