Remember, we are done with spelling words and Homework Logs for the school year. Keep reading every night and working on iReady. We also have our Teach the Class mini-project due this Friday, May 26th. Teach the Class

This will be the last Fridge Notes of the school year! Fridge Notes May 22 PDF

This week, we will  be working on a rap-style Readers’ Theater based on the book Hip Hop Dog by Chris Raschka. This fun activity is a great way to practice our fluency skills, particularly phrasing and reading with expression. We will be recording our rap on Wednesday, May 24th. To help us get into character, I am asking that each student bring some accessories to wear as part of their costume, such as a baseball cap, sunglasses and/or “bling.” Thanks!

This week we also have a special opportunity to watch history come to life. The 5th grade hallway will be transformed into a Wax Museum and the 5th grade students will be statues of famous historical figures. Our class will visit the museum this Wednesday, May 24th and again this Thursday, May 25th.  Each student is being asked to bring 5 nickels in a baggie labeled with their name. They will place a nickel in a statue’s cup to make it come “alive.”

In this week’s Fridge Notes I mention that the students will learn a little rhyme to help them remember the steps to rounding a number. Here is the rhyme and some examples in case you want to reference it at home:  Rounding PDF

Last week we learned about our last habit from the “7 Habits of Happy Kids.” Habit #7 is “Sharpen the Saw” (Balance Feels Best). This habit stresses the importance of taking care of our bodies by eating right, exercising and getting sleep. It also encourages us to spend time with family and friends; to learn in many ways, at many places (not just at school); to find meaningful ways to help others; and to take time to relax and just be in the moment. In other words, we want to find balance by engaging in a variety of activities that use our minds, our bodies, our hearts, and our souls. In our busy lives, this habit can actually be one of the hardest!
