Many students really struggled on the money and time test last week. This actually came as a bit of a surprise to me because they were doing so well during our class activities. Please continue using any websites or apps to practice at home. With money and time, there are so many small details to pay attention to, so continued practice is incredibly important. Some things to really focus on:
- Correctly identifying each coin (particularly nickel vs quarter)
- Skip counting by the different coin values (25, 50, 75, 100 or 25, 35, 45, 50, etc.)
- The hour hand will always be between 2 numbers when the minute hand has passed the 30 minute mark. In fact, when the minute hand gets to 50 or 55 minutes, the hour hand might even look like it is directly on the next number, BUT IT ISN’T! This concept really tripped a lot of the students up on the test even though we repeatedly went over it in class. The clock apps I recommended do a great job of illustrating this concept.
- Determining A.M. versus P.M. (using clue words like “at night” or “before school,” etc.; brainstorming activities that would be performed in the A.M. versus the P.M.)
I hope some extra practice at home and in the classroom will really help the students master these important skills. You can check the last few blog posts and Fridge Notes for suggested websites and apps, but feel free to email me with any questions.
