We are working on describing a character using character trait words. I’m attaching a list of character traits that you can use when you are reading at home with your child. It is very long and contains many higher level vocabulary words. I suggest introducing words on this list as you come across characters that display those traits in your reading at home. In order to understand these difficult words, the students need to be able to link them back to something. Kids have a hard time remembering what “arrogant” means on its own, but if they can link it back to a character in a story, the definition of the word is more likely to stick. Make sure you discuss what the character DOES in the story (actions, dialogue, thoughts, etc.) that SHOWS that particular character trait. For example, if a character sticks up for his friend who is being bullied, that action shows that the character is loyal. After you find a character that exhibits a certain trait, highlight it on the list. This way you can keep track of the words your child has been introduced to! Character Traits
