Math Test and Homework (January 21, 2016)

I just wanted to let you know that we decided to move the Chapter 5 math test to Monday because all of the 2nd grade teachers felt like the kids needed additional practice. As a result, your child is bringing home a regular math sheet and a Martin Luther King, Jr. reading passage and questions for homework. Tomorrow I will send home the review we do in class for you to go over with your child this weekend to prepare for the test on Monday.

The math homework involves solving 2-step word problems. In class, we used our math notebooks so we had lots of room to show our work. We used the CUBES strategy (which I have attached for you to print and use at home), as well as drawings, to help us break apart the steps in the word problem. The math worksheet only has the kids using a bar model, but I told them to show additional work like we did in class (they can even attach a piece of notebook paper if they need to). Here is a picture of how we broke down a problem in class today. Visualizing what is happening in the problem and then drawing pictures to represent each step helps the students clearly see which operations to use and how the problem is split up. I hope this example will be helpful as you work through the homework tonight. Please let me know if you have any questions. 🙂
