It has been a back and forth argument about whether the school should spend more money on sports or the performing arts. Those in favor of sports feel that their equipment gets worn out quite fast and are need of replacing them for next season. Those in favor of performing arts see that the sports department gets enough money as it is, meanwhile they are in need materials like microphones, costumes, lights, cameras, etc.  This can be a tough decision for those who are included in both school sports and the arts. Yet some people see that it’s only fair that the budget is split evenly between the two.

We surveyed 50 people and here are the results:

-24% voted sports

-16% voted performing arts

-60% voted both

From these results, we can predict that maybe the two will join forces and demand the upgrades they need.

Justin Gomez, 10th Grade, is a runner on the track team and feels that the money should be put towards the track itself. “It’s falling apart and needs to be redone. We also need new starting blocks.”

Ms.Foley, Algebra 2 teacher feels that women’s sports should be focused on more.

Ms.Storozuk, Chemistry teacher, is in favor of performing arts. “They have to fundraise on their own; it’s like them against everyone else.”

Ian Beltran, 10th grade, is a member of color/winter guard and orchestra. “Sports manages their own expenses while we have to pay over $1,000 for regiment dues. Football dues are only $50…”

Lily Fuller, 10th grade, is in the drama department and favors the performing arts. “Our funding has been cut and we have to fundraise on our own. We should get funded more because we provide a creative outlet for everyone.”

This article is just to see what the students and staff feel that the money should go to, but if they feel as strongly as they say they do, they may start a petition and bring it up to the school.
