On February 22nd the Timber Creek Dance Teams competed against 3 other schools in the east Orlando area, East River, Colonial, and University. Both the Apprentice and Elite team performed one hip hop and one lyrical/contemporary piece. We are proud to say that Timber Creek came in first place, bringing home a huge trophy and bragging rights for the rest of the year.
University High School hosted the event in their gym at 6 o’clock that evening. There were many students and parents from each school that attended and University was a wonderful host. According to Mrs. Perry, the dance teacher here at TC, University was “accommodating, sweet, and organized”. In the competition there were 5 rounds, each team performed once per round and there were four judges. Outside of these rounds there was a improvisation section where two students from each school performed to music without prior knowledge. Elite Team Dance Captain Naida Velez was one of the students who represented Timber Creek during the improvisation round. Velez said that this round “challenged [her] to think outside the box and think of different ways to move that could pull the judges attention”.
Even though competition can usually cause tension, there was mostly friendly competition among the different schools. When asked about the performance of the team, Apprentice Team Captain Taylor Lee said, “I think the friendly, yet competitive energy really pushed us to perform even more, and really do our best to not only entertain the audience but also the judges.” Mrs. Perry also thought that “the overall cohesiveness, enthusiasm, and readiness of the team this year” contributed to the dancers’ success.
