Timber Creek dancers ready to take on the dance world!

Did you know that every year our very own Timber Creek Elite Dance Team holds a dance convention for the entire Dance Program? It takes place in the Performing Arts Center every year, and if you didn’t know let me tell you a little bit about this amazing convention we have for all dance students!

The Dance Convention is a chance for dancers in the program and to get a little taste of what the real dance world is like. The real dance world is so fast paced and the Dance Director, Tara Perry, uses this convention as an opportunity to prepare students. Would you believe that the entire Dance Convention is run by students? Our talented Elite Team takes on the responsibility every year of splitting into groups, and choreographing a short combination as well as,  transitions for the different levels on dancers in the program. They then have to organize a dance convention class consisting of warm up, and learning choreography. The students are challenged with picking choreography in a short amount of time and executing it with performance and confidence.

The dancers on the Elite Team are very familiar with how a dance convention goes as they have attended various ones outside of school. This is not only a way for the students taking class to grow but this also prepares the Elite Team dancers in more ways than one. This allows them to be able to see what it’s like to teach others, and have to create choreography and know your counts and musicality. They have to pay attention to details and prepare for lots of questions to be asked. “Teaching showed me how to be a leader. I needed to incorporate both constructive criticism and compliments to make sure my dancers were ready for the show,” Senior, Naida Velez expressed.

Not only do the Elite Team Members get the privilege to teach all day, but this year Mrs. Perry was able to bring in a special guest for both the Elite and Apprentice Team! Our special guest was Jon Lehrer.  He is well known for his unique style of dance and even has his own professional dance company since 2007. Lehrer taught a Master class and gave us choreography to perform in our annual Winter Showcase taking place February 28th! “The master class taught me so much, I learned more about modern dance techniques and this opened my eyes exploring the more diverse styles of dance,” Junior, Zuli Alamo stated. Overall, these dancers are so lucky to get this experience every year all thanks to Mrs. Perry. At Timber Creek High School we are preparing students for the future in all areas!

Thanks John! Here students are pictured with the amazing John Leher after a master class. “We explored and gained so much knowledge from class!” Freshman, Amanda Ortiz mentioned. Photo donated
